CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) ------------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA WEDNESDAY May 23,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: Cricketers from the Mt. Rose Seventh Day Adventist Comprehensive School and the St.Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) yesterday locked horns at the National Stadium in St. George’s to decide the champion of the 2007 United Insurance Cricket competition. SAASS won the toss and sent Mt.Rose in to bat on what seemed a very good pitch for both batsmen and bowlers. Mt.Rose was able to amass a total of 185 for 7 wickets in their allotted 35 overs. D. Daniel top scored for Mt.Rose with 57 not-out. Other useful knocks came from G.Paul, who made 33 runs and D.Redhead who made 30 runs. Bowling for SAASS, T.Carmichael had figures of 2 wickets for 30 runs in his 7 overs while M. Simon had 2 wickets for 35 runs in his quota of overs. In responding to Mt. Rose’s total, SAASS lost two early wickets which proved to be a very decisive point in the game. The Mt. Rose bowlers and fieldsmen continued to apply the pressure and were rewarded with wickets at regular intervals. Only L.Calliste (32 runs), K.Charles (28) and M.Simon (24) offered some form of resistance for SAASS. They were finally dismissed for 135 runs – 51 runs short of their target. The Mt. Rose victory was celebrated by the cricketers, principal, teachers, students, past pupils and supporters of the school, who gathered at the stadium to look at the game and cheer the team on. The SAASS team also had a strong and very vocal presence, making the atmosphere evocative of the recently held Super Eight matches that were played at the nation’s top cricketing facility. During the short presentation ceremony which took place after the cricket match, Mr. Trevor Renwick of United Insurance said that he was impressed with the performances of the two teams and congratulated Mt. Rose Secondary on their victory. He also thanked the Ministry of Sports for their hard work in keeping the competition running for more than 15 years and promised that his company will continue to provide sponsorship for the tournament in the years ahead.

Congrats GSDACS. I am a past student and although we never excelled in athletics we always found our place on the cricket pitch. I am quite certain that Mrs. Mary Caton-Jeffrey is one proud woman.
