CATEGORY:INVESTIGATION ---------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA FRIDAY May 25,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: A second and more comprehensive enquiry is to be launched into the playing of the wrong anthem during the official hand-over ceremony of the Grenada National Stadium (by the Chinese to the Government and people of Grenada). This was disclosed to the media earlier on this week by Senator Einstein Louison, Minister of National Security. On February 3, 2007, the Royal Grenada Police Band played the anthem of Taiwan, instead of the anthem of the People’s Republic of China, in front of a parked National Stadium, which included a contingent of Chinese officials and a large number of Chinese workers. The gathering was meant to thank the Chinese for their gift of the stadium to Grenada and to show the strength of the budding Chinese-Grenadian friendship. This unfortunate incident was a major diplomatic embarrassment for Grenada and it made news headlines around the world. The Government of Grenada subsequently appointed a three-man committee to conduct an investigation into the matter. According to Senator Louison, the report submitted by the first committee - comprising Deputy Commissioner Raymond Charles, Superintendent John Charles and Assistant Superintendent Arthur Renaud – had some shortcomings that have to be addressed. He said that the correct anthem was available and that the report did not provide anything conclusive as to where things went wrong. The second Committee, which is made up of two persons (Colonel Nestor Ogilvie and Victoria Hughes), is expected to conduct a more detailed and extensive investigation. Senator Louison stressed however, that the playing of the wrong anthem could have been a genuine mistake, and if it was, then the second report should address this and other shortcomings. This committee is expected to hand in its report within a one month period.
