GRENADA AND DOMINICA COULD INVITE COMPETITION FOR LIAT/...
Grenada and Dominica have signalled their willingness to join St. Lucia in inviting other carriers to service their countries. This, as the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States appeared split on efforts to drive down the high prices charged by the regional airline, LIAT. St. Lucia has already entered into an agreement with American Eagle to fly between that country and Barbados, beginning later this year. The island’s Tourism Minister Allan Chastanet says other routes could be added later. Antigua and Barbuda and St. Vincent, two of the three main shareholder governments of LIAT, appear unwilling to have a reduction in the prices charged, with both governments saying they were not prepared to have taxpayers meet new financial obligations to the airline. LIAT and Caribbean Star Airlines entered into a commercial agreement on February 1 this year and the shareholders of both carriers announced recently that they would finalise their merger on June 15.
