INSIDE GRENADA
THURSDAY JUNE 7,2007
by Wallace J.A
GRENADA: Bernard Coard, deputy prime minister during the reign of the ill-fated People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) from 1979 – 1983, along with some of his colleagues, should be re-sentenced this month during the June assizes.
The group, formerly referred to as the ‘Richmond Hill 19’ have been incarcerated at the Richmond Hill Prison for the past 23 years for the role they played in the killing of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and others in a bloody palace coup on October 19,1983.
Back in February of this year, the Privy Council in London handed down a landmark ruling in which the Law Lords ordered that the case involving Coard and his colleagues be sent to the Supreme Court so that the appellants could be re-sentenced.
The ‘Grenada 13’ now find themselves in the position as if they have just been convicted of the murders and are awaiting sentencing. The Supreme Court must now decide on appropriate sentencing after hearing arguments from both defense and prosecution.
The matter is tentatively set for June 18 at the Number One High Court. On Friday June 8, 2007 (tomorrow), Mr. Robert Branch, the Supreme Court Registrar, will meet with representatives of all media houses in Grenada who are interested in covering the re-sentencing of the ‘Grenada 13.’ The objective of this meeting is to arrange all the necessary and relevant requirements from the media during the period of re-sentencing which include courtroom accommodation, media accreditation, and writing in the court.
