CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) ---------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA SATURDAY June 9,2007 by Wallace J.A According to a Ryan Patrick article appearing on the CaribbeanCricket.com webpage, there seems to be some controversy brewing over the selection of an ODI captain for the One Day series against England. It is believed that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has rejected the nomination of Chris Gayle as stand-in captain for the ODI side in England. The Board’s choice for captain (Daren Ganga), however, is not even a member of the ODI squad picked by the selection panel (Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts). Patrick indicated that a source had revealed to him that the board’s Executive Committee, made up of the presidents of the regional associations, had rejected the selectors’ nominations for ODI captain and vice-captain (Chris Gayle and Denesh Ramdin respectively). They opted instead for Daren Ganga and Shiv Chanderpaul. The selectors do not seem to have a problem with the board’s rejection of Gayle as the stand-in captain but do not believe that the board should get involved in the selection of the team. Ganga was not selected as a member of the ODI team and if the board picks him as captain, then they are essentially getting involved in the selection of the team. It is also believed that the selectors are disappointed with the board’s rejection of Denesh Ramdin as vice-captain in favour of Chanderpaul. Many people see Ramdin as a future captain of the West Indies team and it effectively robs the selectors of the opportunity to put Ramdin in a leadership position. Ganga, who is the present captain of the West Indies test side in England (following Sarwan’s injury and subsequent return to the West Indies), has had dismal performances with the cricket bat to date and, in the eyes of many, is yet to justify his selection for the tour of England. His omission from the ODI squad leaves Gayle and Chanderpaul as the other logical choices for captain. We will just have to wait and see how this episode in the never-ending drama of West Indies cricket pans out.
