NEW OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE SET UP IN GRENADA
A nine-member group, called the Oversight Committee, which has been established to look into arrangements for the staging of local, regional and international events in Grenada, is breaking new ground. This move was born out of the circumstances that surrounded the wrong anthem being played during the ceremony when the Government of China handed over the National Stadium to the Government of Grenada and a desire that such incidents should not occur again. In reviewing a recent report into the incident, Senator Louison, Minister in the Prime Minister's Ministry responsible for National Security, indicated that there are still some areas that need further investigation, based on the fact that several matters still remain unclear. In moving ahead, the new Oversight Committee led by Arthur Hosten, has met and held discussion with Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Elvin Nimrod and several senior officials. They dealt with the issue of putting standard procedures in place and implementing specific structures for greater collaboration and understanding among all parties in the planning of events, so that they can be professionally executed. The meeting also emphasised the importance of observing protocol and conventions. There was concern about the need for the nation to respect persons holding high office, protection of national systems and legacies and arrangements for ongoing events' management training in the various ministries. Mitchell views the agreement to set up the Oversight Committee as the wisdom that's enshrined in his ruling administration to deal with problematic issues, so as to prevent situations getting out of hand. He expressed a great deal of satisfaction that the Oversight Committee will maintain systems and introduce the necessary mechanisms, which will be an important aspect in preserving the image of the country. Mitchell spoke of the need to eliminate mistakes and that "all should strive for perfection" to ultimately reduce embarrassment to the country. He told the members of the Oversight Committee to work closely together and draw on each other's experiences in the attainment of their goals. The Oversight Committee is to continue conducting consultation with the nation's sectoral interest groups, so that they can be well-informed of their mandate about professionally organising exclusive engagements.
