GAYLE EXPECTED TO LEAD WINDIES IN ONE-DAYERS
It appears that seasoned opener Chris Gayle will lead the West Indies team for the two Twenty20 and three One-Day internationals against England later this month. Following a teleconference with the full West Indies Cricket Board of Directors yesterday, which lasted over two hours, well placed sources told CMC Sports that the presence of the "junior" directors made a difference in the decision to return to Gayle. The Executive Committee had earlier last week overturned the selectors' recommendation for the 27-year-old Gayle to lead the side and had instead opted for his Test opening partner Daren Ganga, who was not even picked in the 14-man team. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a former West Indies captain, is expected to be named as Gayle's deputy. Bruce Aanensen, the WICB's chief executive, told CMC Sports yesterday that the captaincy issue had been referred back to the selectors, following the teleconference. He said an official announcement on the team would be made early today after the selectors had spoken with the Board yesterday. The issue arose after appointed captain Ramnaresh Sarwan was ruled out of the rest of the tour after sustaining a shoulder injury during the second Test of the current four-Test series. Ganga, appointed vice-captain at the start of the series, is now leading the team for the remainder of the Test campaign. Apart from the full Board of Directors, there was also participation in the teleconference by the three non-member directors/advisors. Those three include Clive Lloyd, chairman of the Cricket Committee; Sir Alister McIntyre and Grenville Phillips. CMC Sports reported on Saturday that the selection panel of chairman Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts had written a letter to Aanensen, outlining areas of concern while indicating that they would resign if the matter were not addressed. Subsequently, Aanensen explained to CMC Sport the series of events which led to yesterday's meeting of the full Board. "The selectors nominated a captain, vice-captain and the team. It went to the board as is the normal course of business. There was some disagreement at board level with the nominations and the board suggested an alternative," Aanensen explained. "I have been engaging in some dialogue and discussion with Gordon Greenidge as the head of the selectors and also with Clive Lloyd, who is the chairman of the Cricket Committee. "We want to make sure we do the proper thing and make the right selection. Therefore, we have engaged in a lot of dialogue with the selectors." Reprinted from jamaicaobserver.com
