US PASSPORT LAW COULD BE POSTPONED
The United States Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, has expressed disappointment with moves in Congress to postpone new passport requirements for Americans until June 2009. He said a delay would create a window of vulnerability for the US. The House of Representatives voted on Friday to put back the rules by 17 months, while a Senate committee also supports a postponement. The rules requiring Americans to carry passports when returning from the Caribbean and other destinations in the Americas, is part of a broader package of immigration reforms enacted after the September 11, 2001 attacks. However, its implementation has got off to a rocky start as a large number of passport requests created a backlog in the sytem. Reprinted from bbccaribbean.com
