PAROLE BOARD TO BE CREATED IN GRENADA |
|
|
Grenada officials said Monday they would create a permanent parole board for the first time in the island's judicial history, spurred by events following a 1983 coup that prompted a U.S. invasion.
The announcement came during the resentencing hearing for the so-called Grenada 13. Christopher Nelson, director of public prosecution, said the decision was made after defense attorneys said the prisoners never received the findings from a temporary review board created in late 1999 to review their case. Parole board appointments could be made within two weeks, Nelson said.
The board will review the sentences of more than 300 inmates being held at the island's prison. Currently, only the governor general can issue an order for an inmate's early release.
The resentencing of the 13 prisoners was ordered in February by the London-based Privy Council, the highest court of appeal for the former British territory. The council stated that Grenada does not seem to have any mechanism for providing the defendants with a fair judicial sentencing procedure.
