GRENADA AND CUBA TO STRENGTHEN BILATERAL RELATIONS
In an action to further strengthen bilateral relations, Cuba and Grenada inaugurated the 10th Session of their Joint Intergovernmental Commission in Havana, on Tuesday. Grenada's Minister of National Security, Trade Development and Private Sector, Einstein Louison, who heads his country's delegation to the meeting, expressed his interest in expanding current bilateral relations, which exist since 1961. Debates are focusing on sectors such as construction, health, agriculture, sports, disaster management and the environment. Cuba's Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Marta Lomas reiterated Cuba's commitment to resume works at the Saint George's hospital as soon as the Grenadian government considers it. The hospital project were temporarily halted following the damage inflicted by hurricane Ivan, which hit Grenada in September 2004. Cuba and Grenada established diplomatic relations on April 14, 1974. However, Both countries had previously maintained cooperation relations since 1961 in the fields of education with over 230 Grenadian youths graduated in Cuban universities. More than 1,480 Grenadian citizens have been benefited by the free-eye surgery program known as Operation Miracle, a project initially boosted by Cuba and Venezuela to treat patients suffering from eye diseases, such as cataracts. The program has been expanded to more than 25 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Reprinted from cubaweb
