FREED CONVICT SAYS
One of three of the Grenada 13 released last week by a high court judge has been talking about the events that unfolded during the 1983 coup in the capital, St Georges. Lester Redhead spent the past 24 years behind bars convicted for the execution of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and other cabinet colleagues. Mr Redhead, who was a captain in the disbanded revolutionary army, is the one accused of actually killing Prime Minister Bishop. He has however consistently denied these claims, while acknowledging that the slaying of the eleven who died that day was wrong. Redhead says "sorry" "I have expressed remorse about the events of October 1983," he told BBC Caribbean. Speaking on behalf of himself and the others who were convicted, Mr Redhead said they were "very sorry" for those events. "I don't think it's a situation, an event that can be justified. I mean it was wrong, and it was wrong," he acknowledged. Lester Redhead also says he is making a serious attempt at reconciliation. He has been visiting people who supported efforts to have those convicted of those killings released. Conciliatory talks And he says since being freed a week ago he has contacted a relative of one of the coup victims, a woman who lost her father during the coup events. "She found it necessary to forgive, and that has touched me in a deep and profound way" the freed convict said. Other relatives have not been that forgiving however, suggesting that those responsible for the deaths of Prime Minister Bishop and the others should be "kept in prison for the rest of their natural lives".
