CATEGORY:EDUCATION ---------------------- INSIDE GRENADA SATURDAY July 07,2007 GRENADA:Statistics from the Nation’s premiere training Facilitation Centre, the Department of Human Resources, indicate that Grenadian students at Universities abroad are continuing to make the Nation proud. It is revealed that they are earning high honors and the Government-initiated Scholarship Programme can well be documented as paying off dividends for the future. Mid Western State University reported that eighteen individuals from Grenada were among thirty-four students from the Caribbean who graduated last year. The most outstanding Graduate is Tim Elias of Gouyave, a former teacher and student of the PBC. Mr. Elias earned the President’s Medal of Excellence, as well as the Summa Cum Laude Honors for being the top graduate in the College of Business. He completed his degree with a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average, becoming the fourth consecutive Grenadian to earn this award. DHR has disclosed that this year, twenty-one students will graduate from the University of the West Indies (UWI; six from Cuba and one each from the United Kingdom, Cyprus and Greece. Here at home, twenty-eight scholarship students will graduate from the St. George’s University. In Mexico, fifty-nine Grenadian students are engaged in activities of higher learning, thanks to the scholarships initiated under the Government’s plan of ensuring educational opportunities for the Nation’s young people. According to Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell there will be even more opportunities for the advancement of education and the Nation’s students, with the establishment of the Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (CKLN). In addition, Prime Minister Mitchell expects greater collaboration between the Government of Grenada and the St. George’s University (SGU) would result in more students getting opportunities to further their studies at home. Persons who have a desire to be engaged in the Nursing fraternity are to be afforded the opportunity to study in a Nursing Programme which is being initiated. Being the brainchild behind the education initiative, Prime Minister Mitchell sees the many young Grenadians graduating at a time when Government policy and investment are returning benefits, by having a large number of scholarship recipients ready for the world of work in specified areas.
