CATEGORY:INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE ---------------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA WEDNESDAY July 11,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: The Technical and Allied Workers’ Union (TAWU) and the Grenada Ports Authority are expected to submit the names of individuals to form an arbitration tribunal to the Labour Minister, Hon. Clarice Charles, by Thursday of this week. The powerful trade union has been at loggerhead with the management of the Grenada Ports Authority over the application of the principle of equal work for equal pay. This dispute has been ongoing for months now and the move to establish an arbitration tribunal is intended to bring closure to the disagreement. One person will be chosen by each party as its representative on the tribunal and the chairperson will be someone that is acceptable to both parties or someone chosen by the Labour Minister if the parties can not agree on who the chairperson should be. The tribunal will subsequently have 60 days (with the option to ask for a further 28 days if so required) to do its work and then it will present its findings to the Labour Minister. The decision arrived at by the tribunal will then be final and binding on both parties unless there is some legal discrepancy, in which case, the matter can be carried to a court of law.
