CATEGORY:SPORTS(ATHLETICS) -------------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA FRIDAY July 13,2007 by Wallace J.A Following in the footsteps of Alleyne Francique, who was able to put Grenada on the world’s athletic map, another young Grenadian athlete from the rural parish of St. John has done the Spice Isle proud. Fourteen year old Kirani James, a student of the Grenada Boy’s Secondary School, has won silver in the finals of the 400 meters at the IAAF World Youth Championships in the Czech Republic. Kirani was able to improve his personal best time in the 400 meters for the third time in three days to 46.96 seconds, 0.22 seconds slower than 17 – year-old Chris Clarke of Great Britain who got the gold in the event. Kirani has had a fantastic start to his athletic career. Since coming into the national spotlight as a sub-junior athlete, the young 5’ 7” athlete has been able to impress and entertain sporting fans throughout the island in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Running as a junior this year at the National Intercol games, Kirani was able to break records in some of his events. He went on to represent Grenada at the Carifta games where he stood out head and shoulder over the other athletes in his field, winning gold in the 400m. At this rate, young Kirani James could move on to become one of the best 400m runners in the world in the years ahead. Grenadian Connection joins with all Grenadians – both at home and abroad - in congratulating young Kirani on his magnificent accomplishment and encourages him to continue working hard with a view to making this dream a reality.
