LEGENDS SIGN UP FOR GRENADA CRICKET CLASSIC FESTIVAL
Several West Indies cricket legends have again signed up to take part in the fourth annual Grenada Cricket Classics Festival scheduled for October at the newly-built National Stadium in St George's, organisers have announced. Sir Vivian Richards, Joel Garner, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge are among those joining Grenada's Junior Murray and Rawl Lewis for the October 6-7 event. They will play a Twenty20 match against an ex-England side that will include Allan Lamb, Phil DeFreitas, Robin Smith, John Emburey, and Derek Randall. A Twenty20 match between the national sides of Trinidad & Tobago and Grenada has also been included in this year's classic festival. "With all that we are doing to showcase this event in the UK, we anticipate a number of increased visitors to Grenada for this event," said Director of Tourism Joslyn Sylvester Gairy. "It is also believed that the 20/20 match will attract quite a bit of residents from the Caribbean region". After two years, the event is returning to the national stadium, a newly built multimillion dollar facility - sponsored by China - which hosted super eight matches in Cricket World Cup 2007 in April. After Grenada severed ties with Taiwan, the government in Beijing re-established ties with St George's in the wake of Hurricane Ivan which ravaged the island and the original stadium in 2004. The Cricket Classic Festival, used as a major tourism promotion exercise, is organised by Grenada Sports Ltd, the UK based Sports Promotion Company run by former England Test cricketer Allan Lamb, and County Cricketer Nigel Felton. The company says the classics are being marketed in the UK media including the Daily Telegraph, which is running a special series promoting the festival. Reprinted from jamaicaobserver
