CATEGORY:CARNIVAL BUILD-UP -------------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA WEDNESDAY July 18,2007 by Wallace J.A ST.GEORGE’S: After four rounds of preliminary judging, thirty-one local Calypsonians have been selected to move on to the semi-final round of the competition which comes off on Friday July 27. The chief judge, Roland Gordon, in commenting on the performances of the local artistes during the preliminary stages of the competition, made a number of suggestions as to how they can improve the quality of their work. Offering advice to the artistes, Gordon said there needs to be a lot of emphasis on coherence. “Soca is not just simply about taking anything and putting it together, but… understanding the function of your melody, the function of your lyrics(as it relates to the rhythm pattern), the baseline and the drum beat.” He also stressed the significance of ‘intonation’ since an artiste has to sing in tune -you need to sing in key- because it is a soca song.’ The names of the thirty-one semi-finalists are as follows: No. Name (Sobriquet) 1.
