CATEGORY:PARLIAMENT -------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA WEDNESDAY July 18,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: Parliamentary representative for the constituency of St.George North East and executive member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Nazim Burke, intends to introduce a motion in Parliament when the House of Representatives sits tomorrow (Thursday July 19, 2007). The motion, in his name, seeks to have a Special Select Committee of the House of Representatives formed to inquire into the record of transactions between the Government of Grenada and other parties regarding the exploration and exploitation of Grenada’s marine resources. Burke believes that the maritime resources of Grenada have the potential to transform the economic and social conditions in the state. He thinks that it is the duty of Government to secure, protect and manage the national marine resources in the country for the benefit of its citizens. According to the MP, it appears that Grenada has no active Maritime Boundary Negotiating Team in place at this time and that no negotiations with Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela have been scheduled. Burke, who holds a degree in economics, believes that a Special Select Committee can carry out a very thorough investigation into the present management of Grenada’s maritime resources, determine shortcomings and make recommendations for the more effective utilization of these resources so as to bring greater benefits to the Grenadian people.
