PHONE WAR OVER CARIBBEAN MARKET
CATEGORY:REGIONAL ---------------------- INSIDE GRENADA SUNDAY July 22,2007 by Wallace J.A The rivalry between the two telecom giants – Digicel and Cable & Wireless – over the Caribbean market seems to have gotten more intense. Digicel has hauled its rival before a British High Court claiming that Cable & Wireless has been stifling competition – a claim that Cable & Wireless flatly denies. Before the arrival of Digicel, Cable & Wireless had enjoyed a monopoly in the region and was a sponsor of the regional cricket team – the West Indies. Digicel has now taken over sponsorship of the team and recently renewed a contract with the West Indies cricket Board (WICB). According to an article appearing in a BBC Caribbean report, Digicel said it was "the victim of a co-ordinated effort" by Cable and Wireless to "prevent and delay" its plans to launch competing telephone networks in areas such as St Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and the Cayman Islands. The case is expected to be brought up in the British court sometime next year and Digicel is seeking damages amounting to several millions of dollars.
