BUILDING BACK BETTER - RECONSTRUCTION/RESTORATION OF TH...
CATEGORY:LETTER ------------------- INSIDE GRENADA TUESDAY July 24,2007 by Sandra C. Ferguson Mr. Allan Bierzynski Managing Director Jonas Browne and Hubbard Ltd. Carenage St. George’s Dear Mr. Bierzynski, Re Building Back Better - Reconstruction/Restoration of the JBH Building, Carenage ------------------------------------------ I take this opportunity to offer my congratulations on the splendid job that your company has executed in facilitating the reconstruction/restoration of the historic Jonas Browne and Hubbard building that was recently officially commissioned. While I am not, by any stretch of imagination, an expert on these matters, as an ordinary member of we the people, it seems to me that the work done by your company is a model in building back better. I am impressed by the thought put into the use of space for customer care and convenience, access for the physically challenged and tasteful display of products. I extend my sincere appreciation to your company for its commitment to the preservation of the built national heritage, for caring about the preservation of these landmarks which are an integral part of the identity and character of St. George’s, which many of we the people hold dear. These are also marketed as part of our tourism product. I am particularly appreciative, Sir, since it would have been so easy for Jonas Browne and Hubbard to follow the trend set by some of its other corporate colleagues in St. George’s – demolish the historic building and disfigure the Carenage with a tasteless showroom construction in glass and concrete - in the name of modernization (?). I trust, Sir, that Jonas Browne and Hubbard was able to benefit from a very generous tax incentive package for this restoration work (an incentive package similar to the one that is being afforded many foreign real estate speculators at this time) - for an undertaking which makes all Grenadians, very proud, particularly those who are concerned about the physical and built heritage of St. George’s. Thank you for the corporate social responsibility demonstrated in this regard by your company. We trust that its influence and example will be felt and followed by other responsible corporate citizens in St. George’s. I extend my very best wishes to you and to Jonas Browne and Hubbard Ltd. Sincerely yours, Sandra C.A. Ferguson
