Millions of illegal immigrants in New York could be granted identification cards that will allow them to access several services enjoyed by legal residents.
Supporters of the legislation hope New York will follow in the footsteps of the city of New Haven in Connecticut.
If the Municipal ID legislation, recently introduced into New York City Council passes, undocumented immigrants in the city will be able to live almost like legal residents.
They will be able to open bank accounts instead of hiding their earnings in mattresses and they will be able to produce the sort of identification often demanded before they can receive care at city hospitals.
