PUBLISHER FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST MINISTER'S HUSBAND
CATEGORY:LEGAL MATTER ------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA SUNDAY August 5,2007 (The following is a press release from Publisher and Editor, Mr. Eslee Carberry) A Writ has been filed in the Supreme Court of Grenada against the husband of Yolande Bain-Horsford, Minister of Social Development. The writ against Steve Horsford was filed by Publisher and Editor Eslee Carberry this morning. CLAIM NO: GDHACV 2007/0332. The allegation made by Mr. Carberry in the Writ is that Mr. Horsford, who is a known political activist, slandered and defamed Mr. Carberry and caused him loss of revenue from sales, advertising and goodwill. The defendant Steve Horsford is alleged to have moved around the town of Grenville on 14 July 2007 telling shop operators not to sell copies of the monthly Consumer Guide Grenada magazine that Mr. Carberry had left with the shops for sale and to put them aside because, according to Horsford, the Front Page picture is a "lie". Consumer Guide, is a private business and is documented as such at the Registry in Grenada since August 15, 2002. The Grenville shop operators followed the "instructions" of Mr. Horsford, did not sell the magazines, and returned the stacks two weeks later. We have since learnt that certain shops on the Carenage, St. Goerge's were targeted claiming that the publication should be free since no money was paid for the printing. The Plaintiff claims that while circulating the publications on 14 July 2007, he gave the Defendant a complimentary copy of the July's Consumer Guide, Grenada, (The name is also registered in St. Vincent and the Grenadines) magazine and that about 30 minutes thereafter the Defendant called him on a mobile phone number listed in the magazine and stated "Carberry you have plenty ads, I am instructing you to withdraw all the copies you circulated immediately. I am going on the net (Internet) and I will call all the advertisers and the Prime Minister, and I will go to the hilt with you. The picture on the front page is a lie." The Front Page picture at the heart of the matter is associated with the publication's centre pages article headlined "Market Square Reconstruction: Who Cares?" and was captioned "This is Market #2 in the heart of St. George's - awaiting renovation." The picture was taken by Carlyle "Pye" Noel of ABC Photo Studio, Market Hill early July 2007. We have also been told by certain advertisers that they are instructed to hold back on advertising and they therefore will not be able to advertise with us. (Names withheld) Plaintiff Eslee Carberry further states in the Writ that a former Parliamentary Representative in Grenville informed him (Carberry) that Steve Horsford, on 14 July 2007, personally told the former Parliamentary Representative Clarence Rapier that the picture on the magazine's Front Page is a "lie". The Plaintiff in his claims is asking for damages for Slander, Defamation of Character, Loss of Revenue from Sales, Advertising and Goodwill, such further or other order as the Court shall deem fit, and Costs.
