Prime Minister Keith Mitchell has ended his silence on the bribery allegations that continue to make the news in Grenada and elsewhere. Speaking in parliament last Friday, the PM did not address the allegation specifically but suggested it is of little significance. "This is chicken compared to what you all have done," Mitchell told opposition lawmakers in response to their charges he had embarrassed the country. "There are a lot of things that I can say about members on the other side. There are a lot of things that I can say about this so-called government in waiting. I don't want to talk about those things because they are not nice." Mitchell’s response came weeks after a June lawsuit in New York claimed that the Prime Minister allegedly received US$1 million from German businessman Eric Resteiner in exchange for a diplomatic passport. The suit alleges Mitchell "knowingly shared in the spoil of an enormous pattern of fraud perpetuated by Resteiner on plaintiff." Resteiner is currently serving a prison sentence for fraud in Rhode Island. The prime minister previously had not personally responded to the accusations, though his spokesman called the charges meritless and politically motivated. The spokesmen has also said the government was unaware of the fraud case against Resteiner when Cabinet approved his diplomatic passport.
