CATEGORY:LABOUR DISPUTE ----------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA SUNDAY August 19,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: President-General of the Technical and Allied Workers’ Union (TAWU), Chester Humphrey, is claiming a significant victory for roughly 400 workers of Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC). The Union has been locked in a protracted battle with the company over increases in pay for employees based on rates of pay in 1997. A tribunal – with representation from both the union and CCC – was appointed by the Minister of Labour earlier on this year to determine whether the base pay established in 1997 is applicable as the base upon which further increases should be applied. The Union stated that it was the conclusion of the tribunal that the rates of pay to workers in 1997 must be used in future increases. Humphrey stated that as many as 400 CCC employees can expect ‘significant retroactive pay’ by virtue of the fact that the company has been paying them incorrect rates over the years. He estimated that the total payout to the workers could be somewhere in the region of EC$5 million. The union now awaits a meeting with the Labour Minister and the CCC to bring finality to the matter.
