CATEGORY:CONDOLENCE ----------------------- INSIDE GRENADA WEDNESDAY August 22,2007 by Wallace J.A ST. ANDREW’S: George ‘Touches’ Simon, also known as ‘Broko’ from the rural community of Birchgrove, St.Andrew’s, died on Monday August 20 at the age of 73. Broko has been a very vibrant, industrious and pro-active member of the Birchgrove community for almost all of his life. Apart from looking after the cemetery at Adelphi, Broko was a ‘family-man’ and a hard-working farmer who showed a genuine passion for agriculture. Many people all over the country may remember Broko, however, as one of the country’s most experienced musician. He was an accomplished saxophone player and would have soothed the hearts and souls of numerous persons throughout the length and breadth of Grenada with his sweet, intoxicating melodies. The skill and dexterity that he demonstrated while playing the saxophone earned him the nickname ‘Touches’. Broko was a longstanding member of the Roman Catholic Choir in his community and was also a member of the Birchgrove Lancers. He was the head of a ‘back-in-time’ group in Birchgrove called the Solid Cinders. He was a founding member of the first music band in Birchgrove which would have acted as an inspiration for Rhythm Mix, a modern, young, dynamic band from his community. Broko was also a mentor and unselfishly spent a lot of his free time teaching young people in the area to play the saxophone. Grenada has indeed loss an outstanding son of the soil and Grenadian Connection will like to extend its deepest condolences to his family and friends. George ‘Broko’ Simon is gone, but he will certainly not be forgotten. Grenadian Connection has created a special photo gallery to pay tribute to this remarkable son of the soil.
