CATEGORY:EDUCATION --------------------- INSIDE GRENADA THURSDAY August 23,2007 by Wallace J.A ST.ANDREW’S: The St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) has once again proven to the entire nation that it is one of the finest academic institutions on the island. The school, located in the rural parish of St.Andrew, has recorded meritorious performances in the 2007 CXC examinations. Three students from the school - Jensen Henry, Cliffy Bowen and Devon Chakoo - have recorded passes in all 10 subjects each sat at the 2007 CXC exams. Henry obtained seven Grade 1s, Bowen five Grade 1s and Chakoo four Grade 1s. Nine students obtained passes in 9 subject areas: Andrea Acosta, Cindy-Ann Alexander, Renata Blair, Shevon Garraway, Bentley Langaigne, Garvin Lewis, Karen Matthew, Daudi Mitchell and Kaywana Panchoo. Four students obtained passes in 8 subject areas, sixteen students in 7 subject areas, twenty-four students in 6 subject areas, eighteen students in 5 subjects and twenty-one students in 4 subject areas. The students obtaining passes in one, two and three subject areas totaled thirty-six. Students of the school performed quite satisfactorily in all subject areas ranging from Agricultural Science to Information Technology. In all, there were 41 Grade 1s, 202 Grade 11s and 401 Grade 111s. Challenges faced -------------------- In order to truly appreciate the performance of the school this year (as was the case since 2004), one has to look at the many difficulties and the tremendous challenges that both students and teachers of the institution are faced with since the passage of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The roof of the main building was completely blown off by the hurricane and throughout subsequent years, most classes had to be held outside on the corridors or under the boughs of trees that were left standing. There were always problems and disruptions to classes whenever the sun was too hot or when rain started to fall. In spite of these and other shortcomings, teachers and students were able to come up with creative and innovative ways to facilitate effective sharing and acquisition of information/ knowledge, making numerous sacrifices in the process. Renovation/ rehabilitation of school ---------------------------------------- Work on repairing the school got underway towards the end of last term (May 21, 2007) and is presently in progress. The SAASS project is being funded by the World Bank and the European Union to the tune of EC$3,084,698.43. The school has a student population of over 700, making it one of the largest co-educational institutions on the island.

When you look at the deplorable condition of the school at present, it is a miracle that saass has continued to perform so well - on par with other schools in the nation with much better learning facilities. Congratulations to all the teachers and the students who did well. Semper Navigans!!!
