CATEGORY:COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT --------------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA MONDAY August 27,2007 by Wallace J.A ST.ANDREW’S: Residents of Mirabeau, a village in the rural parish of St.Andrew, now have something to smile and feel happy about. On Friday afternoon, a gift of a lawn-mower was handed over to them by the NNP Caretaker for the St. Andrew’s North-West constituency, Mrs. Delma Thomas. The playing field in the area (known as ‘The Paddock’) is the nucleus of the community and frequently comes alive with activities ranging from well-organized cricket competitions to playing ‘small-goal’ football on afternoons. The grass on the playing field, however, grows very quickly and when this happens, the entire area has to be cleared using cutlasses. This usually takes a long time and entails hard, laborious work. Addressing villagers during the handing-over ceremony, Mrs. Thomas encouraged the residents to take very good care of the lawn-mower, which would be used to cut the grass on the playing field. She underscored the need to have young people channel their energies into positive activities which can bring benefits to themselves and by extension, to their community. Speaking on behalf of the residents in the area, Kermie Alexander, a member of the MSO Exodus cricket team, and Keron Campbell, a member of the national cricket team, both thanked Mrs. Thomas for her donation and assured her that the community will take good care of the land-mower and that it will go a long way in helping to develop sports in the area. The Mirabeau community has produced many outstanding cricketers over the years, some of them representing Grenada in regional cricket tournaments.
