WHEN FELIX CAME CALLING
Then Tropical Storm Felix, now a Category 5 hurricane, pounded Grenada on Saturday morning, knocking down banana trees, other agricultural crops and an outdoor entertainment nightclub. Preliminary reports on Saturday after the storm indicated that three houses were left roofless and toppled over. There were no reports of injury or major mudslides. While electrical power was maintained in some areas of the country, it was shut off in others. The National Disaster Management Agency will give a full report during this week on the damage resulting from the storm. According to the island’s disaster coordinator Sylvan McIntyre, the passage of Felix allowed the country’s level of disaster prepardness to be tested and he is satisfied and pleased with the response. The disaster team has visited the affected areas and has provided assistance to persons losing their roofs. Although the damage was not significant, McIntyre said Grenadians should not let down their guard for September, which is known to be the busiest month of the hurricane season. Also on Saturday, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell toured the country to have a first-hand look at the damange sustained and commended the National Reponse Management Agency and the Royal Grenada Police Force for measures implemented and their efficient execution.
