NEW LOOK GRENADA CRICKET CLASSICS ENERGISED WITH NEW TE...
Cricket Classics style will meet Twenty20 power in the Grenada National Stadium in October as organisers, Grenada Board of Tourism and Grenada Sports Ltd, join forces with Stanford 20/20 to bring cricket fans the Antigua Pro Team, who will take on Grenada’s talented young Twenty20 side in an exhilarating match on Saturday 6 October. These new plans bring an additional attraction to the ever popular Classics Clash between some of the greatest names from past England and West Indies Test Match sides – playing this year in a new format, Twenty20 Match Series. There will be more action on Sunday too, when Grenada plays Trinidad and Tobago, followed by the Classics decider to round off a weekend of unforgettable cricket for fans of all ages. Well-known cricketers returning to the Classics this year will include Sir Vivian Richards, Joel Garner, Curtley Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge, joined by Grenada’s Junior Murray and Rawle Lewis for the West Indies, and Allan Lamb, Phil DeFreitas, Robin Smith, John Emburey, and Derek Randall among others, for England. Grenada Twenty20 fans will also be treated to a chance to watch their star players, including Andre Fletcher, Nelon Pascal, Clevroy Antoine, Devon Smith, Ronald Ettienne, Dennis George and Troy Baptiste, determined to win in front of their home crowd against two of the toughest teams in the game. This exciting new character Classics is the result of collaboration between UK-based Grenada Sports Ltd, the Ministry of Sport and the Ministry of Tourism, and the Grenada Board of Tourism. Plus for 2007 the event is presented by a brand new title sponsor – XL, the fast-growing Charter Airline and travel company, with regular services to Grenada from the UK. There will also be strong Platinum Sponsorship support from an excellent array of local and international companies. Grenada Sports Ltd is a sports promotion company run by former England test cricketer Allan Lamb and county cricketer Nigel Felton, and the Grenada XL Cricket Classics Festival represents a part of the company’s on-going commitment to developing Sports Tourism in Grenada. Over recent years, the company has been working with the Ministry and Board of Tourism and the Ministry of Sport, together with other local Cricket Organisations, UK Tour Operators and a wide range of Grenadian businesses, to bring a variety of cricket teams, sports clubs, and schools to the island to enjoy off-season fixtures and training. The Grenada XL Cricket Classics Festival will be staged on Saturday and Sunday, 6th and 7th October, with the emphasis on outstanding cricket in an atmosphere of good fun, good food and drinks, and of course plenty of good music – in the perfect setting of Grenada’s new National Stadium, already acclaimed as the best in the Caribbean.
