SIMMONS SMASHES TON AS WINDIES LEGENDS WIN
Phil Simmons created history by hitting a swashbuckling century to set up a narrow eight-run victory for the West Indies Legends against the England Masters in the fourth and final encounter as the fourth Grenada Cricket Classics ended Sunday. The unbeaten 111 by Simmons was the first century ever recorded in the Cricket Classics, since its inception here four years ago. It powered West Indies to 180-3 in the Twenty20 fixture and the Englishmen replied with 172-7 wickets when the overs ran out at the National Stadium. Simmons, who came in at No 3 and faced 52 balls, put on an aggressive and entertaining display of batting that overshadowed all other performances. He thumped six sixes and 10 fours. In a brutal innings in which he dominated all the bowlers, particularly seamers Chris Lewis and Phil Defreitas, Simmons played shots to all parts of the field, most frequently to the cover and extra cover boundaries. William Perkins contributed 34, while spinner John Lever picked up 2-22. Jimmy Adams again snatched crucial wickets to lead a West Indies bowling attack that restricted the England run rate. Top-scorer Paul Nixon and Rod Bailey both fell to Adams at crucial stages in the game as the likelihood of attaining victory slowly slipped away from the visitors. Nixon struck five fours and two sixes in his 46 before he was caught and bowled Adams, attempting to drive. Nixon shared in a 38-run fourth-wicket stand with Lewis, who had reached 21 when he was trapped lbw by Vasbert Drakes. Robin Smith belted six fours and crawled to 32 before he was completely mesmerised by a Joel Garner yorker that smashed his stumps. Bailey, on 30, could not negotiate a delivery from Adams and was caught behind by Junior Murray. Adams finished with 3-36 from four overs, while Courtney Walsh picked up two wickets and Vasbert Drakes one. Reprinted from jamaicaobserver.com
