GRENADA TOPS T&T IN OLYMPIC QUALIFIER |
|
|
Grenada, paced by two goals from Lyndon Antoine, outscored Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Group G Men's Olympic qualifier on Saturday evening.
The game was of academic interest only as Cuba had already secured group honours after beating both T&T and Grenada.
The Grenadians led 2-0 at half-time and they fended off a late rally from T&T to reduce the home side to a winless record in the triangular series at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
Antoine sent Grenada ahead after only seven minutes with a perfectly-placed header, impressively leaping high above rival defenders to execute his effort on goal.
Antoine added another goal in the 34th minute, scoring from close range from a left-sided cross.
It became 3-0 in the 46th minute when Shane Rennie scored from the penalty spot.
T&T got a double strike a minute apart from Carlyle Mitchell late in the game, but Grenada held on for the win.
Mitchell pounced on a defensive blunder and scored easily in the 78th minute from a few yards and a minute later, struck a fine goal.
Collecting a long pass on his chest, he - in one motion - shifted the ball away from his marker as he turned and unleashed an accurate left-footed shot into the far corner.
Cuba, who beat T&T 3-0 and stopped Grenada 2-1, and the Group H champions Haiti now advance to the next stage of Olympic qualifying - the CONCACAF Men's Under-23 Championship - along with three Central American teams, plus Canada, Mexico and USA with venue and dates to be announced.
The CONCACAF Under-23 Championship will qualify two teams to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
