CATEGORY:SPORTS (FOOTBALL) ------------------------------ INSIDE GRENADA THURSDAY October 18,2007 by Lester Smith Lyndon Antoine stunned both the Trinidadian players and fans with two (2) first half goals in their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Group G Men’s Olympic qualifier at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Saturday to finish behind winners Cuba.. Antoine, a Canadian-based player, also scored the lone goal for Grenada against Cuba in the 2-1 defeat earlier in the week. It was Ariel Jacobs who provided the assistance on both occasions, the first directly from a corner kick in the 6th minute of play finding an unmarked Antoine inside the six-yard box and easily heading into the goal. The second goal came in the 34th minute against the run of play when again Ariel after picking up the ball on the left flank, darted inside the 18 yard box and slipped it across the goal area to an incoming Antoine who was flawless in executing a well deserved goal. The score remained 2-0 in favor of Grenada up until the halfway stage of the match. It was considered a match of academic interest knowing that neither of the two teams had a chance at qualifying for the next stage – the CONCACAF finals. Grenada came out in the second half with even more purpose and determination to win. Their efforts were rewarded early when Antoine worked his way between two defenders and playing the ball into substitute Marcus Julien in the penalty area, who turned in the direction of goal and was taken down by substitute Devon Drayton who came on for Larry Bacchus. A penalty was awarded to Grenada and stepping to the mark was Shane Rennie directing the ball out of the reach of Trinidadian goalkeeper Andre Charles. Grenada then suffered a blow when left back Peters was shown the red card for a serious tackle from behind on Trinidadian forward Bartholomew in the 72nd minute. The Spice Boys found themselves on a more defensive approach and within minutes, substitute Carlyle Mitchell put Trinidad and Tobago on the score sheet in the 78th minute by hitting home a loose ball after a cross. Mitchell got his second goal two minutes later with a low shot to the far post beating Grenadian goalkeeper Denroy Richardson. Grenada was able to hold on to an unbelievable 3-2 win against a team with far more advantages in the game of football today.
