ELECTORAL OFFICE GIVES UPDATE ON COMPUTER PROBLEM
The Office of the Supervisor of Elections wishes to express grave concerns about statements made in the Senate on Friday, October 26, 2007, regarding the loss of approximately 10,000 names from the current list of electors. The public is informed that the computer system at the Electoral Office was installed by the OAS and checked periodically by that Office. There is no written manual for the system. On September 12, 2007, it was reported that the computer system was not responding to the print command. The usual local IT technician was summoned in an effort to resolve the problem. When the problem was not resolved in the usual manner, the OAS Office was asked to contact the OAS Specialist to assist with the problem. The OAS advised that that Specialist was no longer employed with the Organisation. A local computer specialist was therefore contacted to provide the necessary service and the problem has been identified for repairs. The public is informed that it is not unusual for any computer system to malfunction and it appears that the genesis of the problem is not recent but has only just manifested itself. The public is therefore being reassured that all the information pertinent to the voter registration is available and not a single name has been lost. The Office has a back-up system which is implemented and utilized. There is currently no need for panic. Source: Government Information Service
