GRENADA OPPOSITION'S NEW YORK CHAPTER CELEBRATES ITS 20...
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) opposition party in Grenada says it is continuing to oil its election machinery and, once the ruling New National Party (NNP) makes the election call, they say they will be ready, and ready for victory. Grenada members recently joined with the party’s United States office in celebrating their 20th anniversary. The restoration of respect for national institutions and morality will be priority areas for a new National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, said political leader Tillman Thomas. Thomas told supporters and other Grenadians at a meeting in Maryland on Friday that respect for institutions has been eroded under the current administration of Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell and the NDC will make that a priority issue on assuming office. He said that the NDC will seek whatever assistance necessary to ensure that people who have defrauded the state and engaged in illegal activities will be prosecuted. "We will seek assistance from regional and international law enforcement agencies to investigate people who have defrauded the State," Thomas said. Responding to the question of local government, Thomas said that an NDC government will adhere to the Constitution, which provides for a Council for Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Meantime, former prime ministers, Sir Nicholas Brathwaite and George Brizan, congratulated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the occasion of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the party in New York on Saturday. Braithwaite, who was the first prime minister of the NDC between 1990 and 1995, said the NDC is poised and prepared to deliver at a time when Grenada cries out for increased competence and greater integrity in government administration. There are reports that the former Grenadian leader might be extended a helping hand to the party as it continues to prepare for general election, something that, according to sources, might leave the NNP administration uneasy. "Over the past twenty years, the NDC has changed the political landscape in Grenada," Braithwaite said in statement to mark the occasion. "The party was conceived out of a desire to give to the people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique more responsive and competent government administration." He said that the NDC has always extolled the values of moral integrity, transparency and accountability in public service. Reprinted from Caribbean Net News caribbeannetnews.com
