MITCHELL CALLS FOR CARIBBEAN SUMMIT ON COST OF LIVING
Grenada's Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell has called for a regional approach to tackle the matter of cost of living in the Caribbean. Dr Mitchell has written to CARICOM Chairman and Prime minister of Barbados, Owen Arthur, proposing that a special summit of Prime Ministers and Ministers of Finance be held to discuss the matter. "The rise in the cost of living is causing erosion in the quality of life for people right across the region," Mitchell said in a statement. "We as leaders must therefore put this issue on the top of our agenda and we must act to find solutions now. "It is in this context that I have written to Prime Minister Arthur asking that a special summit be convened," the Grenadian leader said. Dr. Mitchell feels if Caribbean got together as a group, it could take some initiative that could help to deal with the situation. Said Mitchell in the statement: "The government of Grenada, like many other Caribbean countries, has been putting systems in place to try to alleviate the impact of rising prices." The Grenadian leader, who is also the country's minister of finance, is expected to announce measures aimed at tackling rising prices in his upcoming budget speech on November 30, the statement said.
