CATEGORY:AGRICULTURE ------------------------ INSIDE GRENADA SATURDAY December 08, 2007 by Wallace J.A Grenada: At an annual general meeting of the Grenada Co-operating Nutmeg Association (GCNA) on Thursday of this week, many nutmeg farmers were greeted with the news that they will be receiving a bonus this year. The sum of EC$500,000.00 has been set aside by the GCNA for this purpose and should be disbursed to eligible farmers possible as soon as next week. According to Byron Campbell, a Director of the Association, the GCNA had an operating deficit of approximately 1.2 million dollars this year and he is of the view that the government needs to work in partnership with the GCNA if the organization is to survive the harsh realities of the future. The Government of Grenada (GOG), through the Ministry of Agriculture, has pledged to assist farmers in clearing access roads using money from the Kuwaiti fund. Hon. Gregory Bowen, the Minister with responsibility for Agriculture, said at the meeting that the government was willing to support the merger between the GCNA and the Grenada Cocoa Association (GCA). The GOG has already engaged a team of consultants to provide comprehensive information on the steps to be undertaken in order to make the proposed merger of the two associations a reality.
