Grenada’s New York community is still in mourning this morning following the shooting death of one of its own.
Carol Simon, 35, was gunned down on the street Saturday near her Crown Heights home, caught in the crossfire of a gun battle between two unidentified men.
According to police sources, Simon had been walking along Eastern Parkway near Bedford Avenue, across the street from where the men were having a heated argument. Officials said one of the men fired shots at the other man, but he hit Simon instead.
The nurse’s assistant and mother came to New York City from Grenada some 15 years ago, working in several shops along Flatbush Avenue before going to work at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, according to friends and relatives.
Community activists and politicians have offered a $3,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this senseless crime. They are urging the public to help find Simon’s assailant. "We cannot allow murderers to exist peacefully in our midst," Marques Claxton of 100 Black Men in Law Enforcement Who Care has reportedly said.
Simon's husband, Clarence McEwen, runs a popular Grenadian restaurant in the neighborhood, Pop Master Delight.
