INSIDE GRENADA DECEMBER 29,2007 From Philip Spooner (WICB's Media Relations Officer) PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa - West Indies captain Chris Gayle said he was "thrilled and delighted" with the outstanding display which led to the team's historic victory over South Africa in the first Test match at the Sahara Oval, St George's on Saturday. "Beating South Africa in four days on home soil is tremendous. It's my best (Test) match so far since I have been playing for the West Indies," he said. "I'm just thrilled and delighted. This is a really good feeling and I'm happy to be part of it. The team is playing really well together and everyone is supporting each other. We have a really good thing going and I'm happy with what I'm seeing." It was the first time the West Indies recorded a victory on South African soil. Gayle, who was leading the West Indies for the first time in a Test match, lauded the players and team staff. He added that he believed good team spirit and camaraderie were the main reasons for the result. Chasing 389 to win, South Africa were dismissed for 260 shortly before the scheduled close on the forth day, giving the West Indies victory by 128 runs. Fast bowlers Fidel Edwards (three for 37) and Jerome Taylor (three for 66) bowled with heart and did the damage, while allrounder Marlon Samuels won the Man-of-the-Match award for his impressive knocks of 94 and 40. "There were a lot of young players involved, and it was pleasing to see the way they operated under pressure. It's not the series, but it's a win and it feels really good. We are going to celebrate and enjoy the moment. But we know that the next match starts in a few days and we will make sure we are up and ready for that one as well," Gayle said. "Leadership is important, but every player needs an opportunity and I think sometimes people expect too much from players too soon. We have been working on improving day by day, as we go along. We just want to show that we can play well at Test level." The win was West Indies' first away Test win against opposition other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh since beating England by an innings and 93 runs in Birmingham in June, 2000. It was the first Test victory since beating Pakistan by 276 runs at Kensington Oval on May 29, 2005.
