INSIDE GRENADA
JANUARY 18, 2008
Salary negotiations between the Public Workers’ Union and the government came to an amicable conclusion on Tuesday of this week with the signing of the collective agreement. Hon. Clarice Charles signed on behalf of the Government of Grenada while Ms Madonna Harford signed on behalf of the union. The Government’s Negotiating Team was headed by Ms. Beryl Isaac, Permanent Secretary in the Department of Human Resource.
It is expected that public workers will get their first payment at the end of January. Fulltime daily paid and temporary workers are expected to benefit from the negotiations, but payments will be issued on a staggered basis.
The agreement with respect to fringe benefits was not signed and is expected to be dealt with at a later date.
I am happy to know that the PWU and the gov't have reached an agreement. While workers need increases in salaries, unions have to be conscious of the fact that such increases should not derail the economic recovery of Grenada. I do hope that an agreement can soon be reached with the teachers.
