MITCHELL CONFIDENT
Grenada's Prime Minister Keith Mitchell said he was confident that his ruling New National Party (NNP) would win a fourth consecutive term in office when general elections are called. Mr. Mitchell said he was not bothered by recent administration changes that have swept across the Caribbean. While a general election is not constitutionally due until 2009, it is believed that Mr. Mitchell would opt for going to the polls this year. The NNP scraped home in the 2003 general election with a one-seat margin. In the previous poll in 1999 the party won all 15 seats in the island's parliament. The ruling party is expected to face a challenge from the main opposition National Democratic Congress, the Grenada United Labour Party and the People's Labour Movement. Prime Minister Mitchell said his government's performance in the aftermath of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily, which caused widespread devastation across the island in 2004 and 2005 respectively, would have a major influence of the outcome of the upcoming elections. He said another determining factor would be how the public view an "untested" opposition made up mainly of new persons. Reprinted from radioja.com
