West Indies Events, organizer of the first Grenada Classic Yacht Regatta, is pleased with the first regatta edition held last week-end in the turquoise waters surrounding the Spice Islands of Grenada, despite the fact that only 5 yachts participated.
Jan Roosens, who started a Classic Regatta some years ago in St.Maarten-St.Martin has partnered with Fred Thomas in Grenada to set up this new event.
He said that everything went pretty smoothly and sailors had a great regatta and a lot of fun.
Kenny Coombs, organizer of the well know Antigua Classics which has now around 60 participants, recalled the first year having also 6 or 7 yachts during their first edition.
He was in Grenada as advisor to Grenadian James Benoit who was the race director of the event.
The official opening party and skippers briefing took place at the Grenada Yacht Club on February 21th.
The yachts were hosted at Port Louis Camper & Nicholson Marina where the awards presentation party was also held.
On Saturday they all sailed to St.David's where Belair Plantation and Shipwrights offered lunch followed by an evening barbecue while a live band entertained sailors and locals.
The regatta was followed by many people on Grand Anse beach and other places while a bareboat charter catamaran with sailing enthusiasts came all the way from St.Lucia to enjoy the race.
The next Grenada Classic Yacht Regatta will be held from February 19 until February 22, 2009
