YOUNG PEOPLE ENGAGED IN COMMUNITY PROJECTS
INSIDE GRENADA MARCH 06, 2008 from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Several youth from the St. George's area have embarked on a series of community projects, saying they want to set an example for other young people across Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique. They undertook the first project last weekend with the repainting of the Happy Hill Pre-primary School in St. George North-West. Organizer Claudius Monah conceived the idea of the project, sought the support of some of his friends and solicited a donation of paint from a local business group. "I passed through on this road on numerous occasions and every time I looked at the school, I felt real hurt,'' said Monah. "The school was in such a rundown state, so I came up with the idea to mobilize the guys to paint the school.'' Ingrid Jackson, the election candidate for the National Democratic Congress for St. George North-West, joined the youth in the school painting and in cleaning up of the compound. "What you see here is a group of youth who decided that they wanted to be good role models that young people are desperately in need of in Grenada today,'' Jackson said. "They have come and given of their time and I thank them. We recognize that children are real important to Grenada and we need to start teaching and start setting the tone for them, so they will be equally willing to give back when they grow up.'' Monah said his group of volunteers’ plans to undertake more community projects in other parts of Grenada. "We know that we have come under some criticism,'' said Monah, "but nevertheless we had to do this. We, as young people, had to set a standard for the younger ones coming up. We just want to go around and help people do things. I don't care what political party you come from, but we want to help you, once we have the resources.'' Jackson, whose opponent in soon-to-be-held general election is Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, expressed hope that other youth will carry out similar projects throughout the nation. "I really wish that other young persons will see this as a model to follow,'' she said.”It's about putting Grenada first. Hopefully all over Grenada young people are going to come together and are going to be making meaningful contributions to their communities.''
