INSIDE GRENADA MARCH 08, 2008 by SAASS Young Leaders In keeping with this year’s theme for the Young Leaders - Bridging the gap – a group of students from the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) on Saturday March 1 paid a visit to the Cadrona Home for the Aged in La Fillette, St. Andrew’s. The primary objective of the group’s visit fell within the purview of their overall mission to try and bridge the gap between the elderly citizens in the country and the youthful population through cordial interaction and direct personal engagement. This meeting of persons from two entirely different generations not only contributed towards highly animated and exciting conversations but also in a rich exchange of stories, games, dances and general information. These exchanges ostensibly resulted in both groups learning quite a lot from each other and about each other thereby forging a closer relationship based on mutual understanding. As part of their general plan to carry the senior residents at the home on a trip ‘down memory lane’, the SAASS Young Leaders took time out to prepare a special traditional meal for the wonderful occupants. This meal comprised of roasted breadfruit, corned sprats, pumpkin, callalloo, provisions and vegetables. As a drink, they were provided with some cool and refreshing ‘gospo’ juice made by one of the Young Leaders. Farrine porridge was also given to the residents as part of their dinner during the evening time. The inhabitants of the home were very thankful to the group of youngsters from SAASS for the meal and openly comment on how good the food tasted and on the fact that they had not eaten corned sprat in a very long time. As a matter of fact, some wanted to know when the Young Leaders were going to return to chat with them, share ideas and stories with them and prepare another traditional meal for them. The SAASS Young Leaders were very sad when leaving the Cadrona Home because they had spent such quality time with the residents there. Every one commented on how nice the senior citizens were, the new things that they had learned and how much they enjoyed the company of these wonderful group of individuals who were so willing to share their knowledge, time and experiences with them. This priceless experience will definitely be etched in their memory and endure an entire lifetime.
