INSIDE GRENADA MARCH 13, 2008 by Wallace J A ST.GEORGE’S: The 4x400m open for boys brought the curtains down on a very exciting 2008 Intercol Games. Unlike last year, when the winner of the male division was determined after the last race, the boys in navy blue and white from the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School made sure that this was not repeated this year and that they were comfortably ahead of their nearest challenger – the Mc Donald’s College, even though they again won the last race of the day. At the end of the premier two-day athletic event, SAASS was able to amass a formidable 148.66 points while Mc Donald’s College, with 113 points, had to settle for second place. SAASS was able to put in an excellent team effort, but there were several outstanding performances from athletes like Shakir Simmons (who established a new record in the senior shot-put), Akim Bowen, Karel Collier, Kendel Noel and Whalon Frederick. The girls from SAASS also performed commendably at the games but were beaten into third place by St. David’s Secondary School (who once again took the girls’ title for the tenth consecutive year) and the St. Joseph’s Convent (Grenville). The manager of the SAASS team, Mr. Lester Blache, was very elated with the victory at Intercol. He attributed their success this year to hard work and intense training. He singled out Mr. Joseph Lewis and other members of the SAASS Alumni in New York for special recognition because the organization has been very supportive of the school this year in its preparation for the 2008 Intercol games. Without doubt, the most outstanding male Intercol athlete for 2008 was young Kirani James of the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School. The young Grenadian sensation, who is from The Lance in Gouyave, literally blew away the rest of the field in all his events and was truly unchallenged throughout the entire sporting display. He was able to easily shatter two Intercol records: the 200m junior boys in 20.6 secs as well as the 400m junior boys. Grenadians both at home and abroad should remember the name Kirani James, because he is such an exceptional athlete, and barring any injury, he will definitely do great things for the Spice isle in the years ahead.
