INSIDE GRENADA MARCH 16, 2008 by Wallace J.A ST.ANDREW’S: The students of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) celebrated their victory at the Intercol games at their school on Friday (March 14, 2008). Visitors to the school were greeted with the sounds of students singing, chanting, dancing and drumming - either on plastic buckets or on the school’s drums. After receiving authorization from the relevant authorities, the students, along with some teachers, gathered outside the school’s gate, with the school’s flag and Intercol trophies, and proceeded towards the town of Grenville, singing and dancing. They were accompanied by the school’s drum corp. SAASS and the people of St. Andrew’s have always enjoyed a very healthy relationship, and before its annual sports meeting, the students of the school will parade through the streets of Grenville - an event that has led to a sort of ‘bonding’ with persons in the town. After making one lap through the streets of Grenville on Friday, the students re-entered the school, some of them tired and hoarse from all the excitement and physical exertion. At the school, they ate, drank, played games and generally enjoyed the rest of the school day. The happiness on the faces of teachers, students and many persons from within the ‘Big Parish’ on Friday was not surprising. After losing out on the Intercol trophy for the past three or four years to Mc Donald’s College, the SAASS team had to recoup and go back to the drawing board. The fact that the team was able to stamp its authority on the games from Day 1 was an indication of how focused, motivated and determined the athletes were to reclaim the top spot in Grenada’s premier athletic event. By the end of the games, SAASS was comfortably ahead of all schools on 148.66 points while the Mc Donald’s College was in second place on 113 points. Based on the excellent performances of athletes from SAASS, six of the school’s athletes have been selected (as part of an eighteen-man team) to participate in the upcoming Carifta Games. The athletes are: 1. Whalon Frederick (Under 17 boys) 100M, Long Jump and Triple Jump 2. Emron Gibbs (Under 17 boys) Javelin 3. Akim Bowen (Under 20 boys) 200M; 400M; 4x100M and 4x400M 4. Karel Collier (Under 20 boys) 100M; 200M; 4x100M; 4x400M 5. Shakir Simmons (Under 20 boys) Shot Put; Discuss 6. Wendell Modeste (Under 20 boys) Heptathlon ,high jump, Triple Jump The athletes and Sports Department of SAASS received much needed assistance from the SAASS Alumni Association (New York Chapter) this year in preparation for the school’s 2008 sports meet and the Intercol Games. The school wishes to publicly thank all those who have assisted and supported them in their quest to reclaim the Intercol title.
