WE LIKE WE CARNIVAL
Monday March 17, 2008 The People of Grenada Dear Fellow Grenadians, As a fan of Grenada’s Culture, Calypso and Carnival, it is with great dismay and even greater trepidation that I observe once again that the effort to make Grenada’s Carnival a success is alarmingly missing. While, I will not make it my business to point out what is not being done or what is lacking, I am obligated to continue to make a contribution to this island I love so dearly. To this end Fellow Grenadians I give you the theme for the 2008 Carnival season; We Like We Carnival. The theme for 2008 just as the 2006 theme “August is the Time” was born out of a remake of a hit from yesteryear. The 1981 classic and road march winner, We like we Carnival, originally recorded and performed by the late Timpo is being redone and updated for the 2008 Carnival season. This undertaking gives us the opportunity to once again acknowledge and appreciate the work of pioneers such as the band Moss International and the plethora of Artistes who in one way or the other contributed to the development of Grenada’s music. It would be appropriate at this juncture to thank the brother of Timpo, a Calypso stalwart in his own right, Darius, for lending his support to this effort. The Charles Brothers- Don, Leon, Sydney and Ricky and the others who comprised Moss International and the Kalypso Kastle, must be saluted for their collective pioneering achievements. Fellow Grenadians, a managerial title cannot determine the extent of my love all things Grenadian, and just as with the updated version of August is the Time, You can expect a version of We like we Carnival with an eclectic arrangement of drums reminiscent of the music produced in the 1980’s and early 1990’s along with the ever-present pulsating sound of the conch shell. While we might be in for another round of excuses to justify the poor planning of and lack of vision for Grenada’s premier cultural undertaking, Fellow Grenadians you always find a way of pulling through. 2008 should be no different. It is that spirit of determination and love for our way of life that enabled You to overcome the embarrassment of foreign calypso judges in 2007, late starts and the general demise of Spicemas. But as the 2008 theme clearly points out WE LIKE WE CARNIVAL Let us manifest that love safely, productively and in a participatory fashion in 2008. I Remain Culturally Yours, Dexter Mitchell
