SIGNIFICANT SEA SWELLS EXPECTED--NADMA |
|
|
The National Disaster Management Agency would like to inform the public that a pattern of significant wave height is expected to pass through the Eastern Caribbean between today, Wednesday March 19 and tomorrow, Thursday March 20 2008. This wave activity is being caused by a low pressure system centred over the North Atlantic which is forecasted to generate large northerly swells over the area.
It has been indicated that today the front is forecasted to drift southwards across the island chain with increasing north easterly winds behind, the front resulting in gradual deterioration in sea conditions over the Eastern Caribbean.
In this regard, NADMA would like to urge all boat owners and seafarers to exercise caution when using the sea over the next two days. Vessel operators and fishermen are asked to monitor the sea conditions before venturing out. The public, in particular sea bathers and persons in coastal areas, are asked to take note and continue to listen to the radio and television for any updates which may come to hand.
NADMA is already putting contingency plans in place to deal with any potential significant sea swells. NADMA will activate emergency procedures if this becomes necessary.
