BAKERS ASKED TO RECONSIDER PRICE INCREASE
The Grenada Government wants local bakers to reconsider an increase in the price of bread. The Grenada Bakers Association recently announced a price hike, due to the sharp increase in the price of bakery products. Consumers have seen a 40 percent increase after government announced the removal of the Common External Tariff on a range of products, including yeast and baking powder. But Economic Development Minister Anthony Boatswain said the government is not convinced that the extent of the increase is justified. Bakers Meet With Ministry Officials Representatives of the Bakers Association met with the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development and Planning, Mr. Mike Sylvester, and other officials of the Ministries of Finance and Economic Development and Planning, on Friday, April 4, 2008, to discuss the recent increase in the price of bread. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the impact of the current situation on the consumer and economy in general, and come up with suggestions in an attempt to cushion the effect. At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to take the issues raised at the meeting back to their respective organizations for further discussion with a view to influencing the current prices as well as agreeing on a framework for future price changes. A follow up meeting is scheduled for April 18, 2008.
