GRENADA’S PLAN TO HELP ALLEVIATE FOOD COSTS
Prime Minister of Grenada Dr. Keith Mitchell has outlined plans to cushion the cost of living for vulnerable Grenadians. He called on Grenadians to return to backyard gardening. Dr. Mitchell said the government would next week commence a food basket and transportation programme for secondary school students. He said these are among the government's immediate measures to assist Grenadians in coping with the rising cost of living. The Prime Minister who has conveneda special CARICOM summit to focus on a common strategy to the cost of living in the region, said a permanent solution was needed. "The permanent solution for us to deal with this problem is to deepen the food security arrangement in our country or in other words, the production at the local level for foods that we can use as alternatives to what we import," he said. Dr. Mitchell said the removal of the Common External Tariff on certain food items and the food basket and transportation allowance are among features of the government's initiative. He said food vouchers had been prepared and the transportation scheme where some tertiary institutions already benefiting would be expanded to include secondary school students. Frankly speaking the people who are receiving these benefits not only do not make full use of them, they have not learn to appreciate them . In my opinion too much hand out to these so-called "poor people" who do not prioritize their finances and whose social life is a mess. If they are so poor, why is it that they have more than one cell phone and it's always top up and they never miss a party or bingo. Too much free stuff! Grenadians are just sitting on their butts and waiting for handouts.
