Marlon Glean, former Grenada National footballer and director of the Marlon Glean Soccer Camp and Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme has successfully secured – so far - ten (10) more scholarships for Grenadian footballers to study and play in colleges in the United Sates of America, including Grenadian female soccer players. The Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme and Deslyn Langaigne of Victoria, St. Mark’s made history in 2008 being the first such organisation to – firstly - obtain a football scholarship for a female Grenadian player and – secondly - by Deslyn being the first Grenadian female player to travel to the US to play and study, respectfully. Coming out of a coaching session during the 3rd Annual Marlon Glean Soccer Camp, Deslyn left Grenada in January and is currently attending Hinds Community College in the state of Mississippi. The other players who are earmarked to travel by August of this year are Cudel Collins, Nikel Paul and Steven Peters of St. Mark’s who will be joining Grenadian Ken Searles, Ian Perrotte and Akinson Neckles at Marshalltown Community College; and Andre Charles of Grand Anse, St. George’s, Kwan Baptiste of Chantimelle, St. Patrick’s, and Kennis Paul and Schevon Joseph of Gouyave, St. John’s will attend the University of South Carolina – Aiken. The Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship programme is in the process of finalising scholarship awards for Kemmile Bristol, and Kishani Thomas who will become the second female Grenadian player to receive such learning-and-playing opportunities. Each of the above-mentioned players is either past-participants of the Marlon Glean Soccer Camp or would’ve assisted with coaching at some point, and even both. The main objective of the Marlon Glean Scholarship programme is to continue providing support to Grenadian youth - especially those engaged in the sport of Football. According to Marlon Glean, Founder of the scholarship programme, “my personal ambition over the past seven (7) years has been to open doors of educational opportunities to young, talented individuals in the area of sports. This ambition has lead to the formation of the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme (MGSSP) in 2001 in which over forty (40) students has since attained scholarships; all of whom continue to earn degrees in various fields and start career-paths they most likely would have never attained without their sporting talent playing a critical role in, firstly, being accepted to a university, and secondly - but more importantly – being provided with full financial assistance for their tuition and other expenses”. Currently, Grenadian Alister Flemming and Kerry Bristow are on soccer scholarships at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Glean has also successfully secured a scholarship for Mid-fielder Luke Blakely of Leicester, England who has been sharing fields with Searles and Perrotte at Marshalltown Community College. This year saw three (3) of the eight (8) teams in the National Junior College Finals having five (5) Grenadian players from the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme. Within the last two (2) years, three (3) of the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme recipients, Joel Forde and Sherwin Merryman successfully completed Bachelor’s Degrees in Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University; and Kerry Wilson with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Ricky Morris and Ashton Henry will be graduating from American International College and Hartwick College respectfully in May of this year with Bachelor’s Degrees in Business Administration.
