US COLLEGES DONATE MORE SOCCER UNIFORMS TO LOCAL PROGRA...
Grenada’s soccer has experienced more acts of kindness from two United States colleges through the prestigious Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme. West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC) Women’s Soccer Team and Marshalltown Community College Men’s Soccer Team have both donated their uniforms to Grenada through the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme for active teams in need of training apparels. According to Marlon Glean, founder and director of the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme and the Marlon Glean Soccer Camp, “These coaches, colleges and other such institutions - as a whole - implement very intense soccer programmes, and are evidently very committed to the sport of soccer. They understand players’ needs and what it takes to grow the sport of soccer to its fullest potential. These uniforms will go a long way in continuously building soccer professionally in Grenada; and I am sure that the players will wear these uniforms with great pride and appreciation, and continue to beckon the spirit of the colleges’ successes through their field play.” Glean further stated, “We are profoundly and continuously grateful for these developmental gestures made by these coaches and colleges in the United Sates. Not only have they assisted us in the donation of these timely uniforms again, but they continue to assist our Caribbean athletes with scholarships for academic advancements while playing soccer.” Six such student-athletes are Alister Flemming and Kerry Bristow of Grenada who are currently attending West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Kerry Wilson who graduated from the same college with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration last year; and Akinson Neckles, Ian Perrotte and Ken Searles who are currently studying while playing soccer at Marshalltown Community College. By August of 2008, another three Grenadian footballers will join Neckles, Perrotte and Searles at Marshalltown Community College, namely: Cudel Collins, Nikel Paul and Steven Peters of St. Mark’s. This is the second set of uniforms donated by West Virginia Wesleyan College. The uniforms were donated by Coach Glenn Francis and the Women’s Soccer Team. For the first time, Coach Marcelo Serrano and Marshalltown Community College has donated their soccer uniforms to the programme. In 2006, the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme received two sets of uniforms from Coach Philmore George and Spelman College, which were passed on to the Florida Government School and the St. John’s Soccer Academy during the 2nd Annual Marlon Glean Soccer Camp at Cuthbert Peters’ Park in Gouyave. In 2007, the scholarship programme received another set of uniforms from Coach Gavin Donaldson and West Virginia Wesleyan College Men’s Soccer Team which were donated to the L’Anse Soccer Team of Gouyave, St. John’s. Clayton State University have also donated two sets of uniforms in 2007 which are currently being used by the St. Rose Modern Secondary School Soccer Team. The Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme plans to continue engaging more U.S. colleges in obtaining their soccer uniforms to benefit more teams on the island.
